Hannah I. Lipman

Hannah I. Lipman, MD, MS is Director of Bioethics at Hackensack University Medical Center and Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University. Dr. Lipman has particular expertise in bioethics issues relating to clinical decision making, bioethics education for a variety of learners, and bioethics consultation.

Dr. Lipman conducts bioethics consultations, helping clinicians, patients, and families navigate difficult health care decisions, understand and approach clinical ethical dilemmas, and resolve conflict. As Chair of the Hackensack University Medical Center’s Bioethics Committee, she works with a dedicated group to provide bioethics education throughout the medical center and ensure hospital policies are clear, current, and helpful. Dr. Lipman provides research ethics support by serving on the Institutional Review Board.

Trained in geriatric medicine, palliative medicine, cardiology, and internal medicine, Dr. Lipman practices inpatient geriatrics and hospice.

Prior to joining HUMC in January 2018, Dr. Lipman was Associate Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Associate Director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Bioethics. She ran the Bioethics Consultation Service at Montefiore and was Director of Bioethics Education at Einstein.

Dr. Lipman received her BA in Economics from Northwestern University and her MD from Columbia University.  She trained in internal medicine at University of Michigan, cardiology at Tufts New England Medical Center, and geriatrics, palliative medicine and cardiology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.  She earned a Master of Science in Clinical Research at Mount Sinai.
